If a tree falls in a forest.......

So if you become a Christian and burn all of your CD's and stop cussing, drinking and smoking, but make no attempt to alleviate suffering or pain in life around you, do you think God cares? Isn't that tithing mint leaves? So you shove your righteousness in front of everyone within spitting distance, does God really care?

Sometime Christians have a hard time grasping the idea that the object is not the problem but why you do what you do is the problem. If I were to go to China and buy a Buddha statue. Place the statue on a mantle for decoration. The statue is doing no harm. No one is viewing the object as a god, just a funny looking guy. It is only a problem when I make it a problem. We need to stop looking in the mirror to find ways to look like a Christian and look within ourselves to become a better Christian.

I agree. What does it mean though to become a "better Christian"? If you walk the isle only to avoid hell, is that not an entirely egocentric act

Yes, to walk the isle only to avoid hell is an egocentric act. But that is what we have been taught. TO BE SAVED. Not that salvation is not important but there far more to Christianity than salvation. Salvation is only a part of the journey.

Instead of "better Christian" insert better person. Like you stated, it is not about spitting righteousness but more about alleviating suffering around you.

Maybe looking at salvation as a life long process, rather than a finite point in time, would give better direction.
